The Property Ombudsman (TPO) Member

Help & Advice To Resolve Property Sales Disputes

The TPO provides consumers with free, impartial and independent advice for all types of property sales. Its Redress Scheme has been providing consumers and property agents with an independent dispute resolution service since 1990.

It is a government approved scheme to provide independent rulings  designed to achieve a full and final settlement of disputes and all claims made by either party.

All disputes are considered on a case by case basis and TPO can, if it rules that an agent has acted unethically, unlawfully or unreasonably, order a compensation award of up to £25,000 to their client for actual and quantifiable loss and/or for aggravation, distress and/or inconvenience caused by unreasonable behaviour.

 

A Fair and Impartial Ruling

TPO practices have been validated by the Ombudsman Association for its principles of good governance for ombudsmen schemes (independence, transparency, accountability, integrity, clarity of purpose, effectiveness) inline with Ombudsman standards.

 

Registration with TPO is a Legal Requirement For All UK Agents Dealing In Residential Sales

Registration with TPO ensures any company bearing the ‘Registered Agents’ logo (see opposite)  has provided either company registration details or some form of authenticated identification (e.g. a recent utility bill + a photographic ID), holds a designated Client Account (to ensure clients’ money can not be confused with their own or the ir business’ money) and has Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance.

Registration only does NOT  require companies agree to follow TPO Codes of Practice.

 

Membership of TPO is an Optional Addition To Registration

Members of TPO agree to abide by TPO Codes of Practice and can display the TPO logo opposite and offer their customers confidence of TPO redress in the very unlikely event of a dispute.
